FOX Cancels “Utopia”

utopiaWell short of its goal to run for a full year, FOX has cancelled reality series, Utopia.

Estimated to cost around $50 million, the ambitious reality series was pegged to be the next great reality series.  Utopia was, essentially, Survivor and Big Brother in one (thus, not as original as FOX hoped).

It debuted in September to 4.6 million viewers and 2.0 A18-49.  In its first episode without the NFL as a lead in, on Tuesday nights, it dropped to a meager 2.5 million viewers and 0.9 A18-49.  A few weeks later, FOX pulled the plug on the Tuesday episodes.  They would, however, leave it on Friday nights for the rest of the year.

In its first episode back from the World Series hiatus, Utopia fell to a paltry 0.5 demo – enough reason for FOX to pull the plug.

As for the contestants, they will be notified today, and sent home.  All online live feeds with go dark later tonight.  The Friday night timeslot will be filled with encores of Masterchef Junior, with originals airing on Tuesdays (also where Utopia had aired).

“Cristela” Solid in Week Two

ustv-cristela-stillEpisode two of Cristela performed well in week two, averaging 5.97 million viewers and 1.2 A18-49, down only one tenth from last weeks debut.  After growing from Last Man Standing last week, Cristela had to settle for solid retention this week (89% viewers / 92% demo).  We’re only two weeks into Cristela, but as of now, it looks like a winner for ABC.

The nightmare continues for FOX with year-long Utopia.  The latest episode notched 1.88 million viewers and 0.7 A18-49, even with last week.  The World Series starts next week on FOX, so Utopia is pre-empted.  This gives FOX a chance to cancel it, or will they ride out the low ratings for a year?

Promising Debut for “Cristela”

ABC’s latest comedy offering, multi-camera Cristela, got off to a promising start Friday night.

ustv-cristela-stillThe half hour debut of Cristela launched to 6.57 million viewers and 1.3 A18-49.  While that may not sound like much, the 1.3 demo was tied (with Hawaii Five-0) for the highest scripted offering of the night.  In addition, Cristela was able to grow from its lead in, Last Man Standing, by a tenth in the demo, while holding onto 100% of its total audience.  ABC notes Cristela is the first comedy to grow from Last Man Standing since November 2012, when Malibu Country made its debut.  So far, so good for Cristela.

Over at FOX, Utopia continued its low-rated run with 1.87 million viewers and 0.7 A18-49.  Sadly, despite only doing an 0.7, that was up a tenth from last weeks Friday episode (yikes!).
