Last nights fifth season premiere of The Walking Dead hit a new series high last night, nabbing 17.3 million viewers and 8.8 A18-49. No, that is not wrong, The Walking Dead did a massive 8.8 demo last night. When final broadcast numbers are published tomorrow, The Walking Dead is likely to finish ahead of NFL Sunday Night Football.
Per SpottedRatings (one of the best sources for ratings, in my opinion) the previous series high for The Walking Dead came just last fall, when its debut scared up 16.1 million viewers and 8.2 A18-49 demo.
Like previous seasons, the upcoming episodes will likely slip a few tenths, but this show just does not stop growing! The AMC model of airing the entire show prior to season premiere is working, and working very well.
When all is said and done, The Walking Dead will probably be the highest-rated series on television this season. For a cable series, now in its fifth season, that is absolutely incredible.
Unsurprisingly, AMC renewed The Walking Dead for a sixth season just last week. The second half of season five will return in February, with the remaining seven episodes from the first half of season five continuing next Sunday.
