Predictions for New Comedies: CBS

Here is the NEW scale that will be used this season:
Breakout (5) – Strong out of the gate; one of the highest rated new series
Hit (4) – Ratings are high, but not one of the highest rated new series
Solid (3) – Neither strong nor weak, simply puts up average numbers
Weak (2) – Not a bomb, but puts up consistently low numbers
Bomb (1) – Fails to catch on; one of the lowest rated new series

CBS-The-McCarthys_article_story_largeQuick Premise: Revolves around a sports-loving, hard-working family from Boston, who find out their son is gay.
Timeslot: Thursdays at 930/830c
Lead in: Two and a Half Men
Competition: A to ZBad JudgeGracepointReignScandal

Analysis: I’ve had a tough time figuring out how The McCarthys will perform.  This is through and through a CBS made comedy, so it shouldn’t have a hard time finding an audience.  However, unlike past seasons, debuting in late October probably does not help much.  Other shows in the hour have already had about a month to get a head start.  Luckily, most of those new shows in the timeslot have bombed.  Every time I think of a positive, a negative outweighs it, and vice versa.  The one big positive is that The McCarthys has a pretty good lead in.  Yes, Two and a Half Men is old (twelve seasons!), but it is still potent in the timeslot.  With possibly-renewed interest in how Two and a Half Men concludes, The McCarthys has an audience to build upon.  The McCarthys won’t do big numbers, and with two other comedies waiting to air, chances of success are slim.
Prediction: WEAK (2)
